For many people, Winter is a magical season. For others, it can be cold, gloomy and downright depressing. Enter, Hygge (pronounced HOO-gah), the Danish word for cozy, the hottest trend for the home this season. The practice has been popular in Denmark and Scandinavia for decades. The New Yorker magazine described hygge as being “associated with relaxation, indulgence and gratitude” and further, “joining with a loved one in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere.” It’s all about transforming the space around you to achieve the ultimate cozy atmosphere. Light tons of candles, use lamps with warm bulbs instead of fluorescents, light a fire in the fireplace if you have one. Once you have created your sanctuary, you are able to relax and use this Winter season as your time to finish projects you have wanted to. Cuddle up and start that book on your to-do list, or that podcast you have downloaded. Enjoy small gatherings of family and friends with simple, well prepared food. Start celebrating the everyday things in your life, take joy in the art of homemaking; this is a trend we can all embrace. Who knows? You might even start to miss winter come spring time.
